Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy necessary for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play very active roles.
There are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease. |
Although there is no cure for diabetes, those diagnosed can lead an eventful and long life. The cornerstone of treatment is maintaining appropriate blood glucose levels. Your blood glucose levels are controlled through eating a healthy diet, getting an adequate amount of exercise, and taking any prescribed medications or insulin as directed by your physician. Your physician may also have you test your blood glucose levels at home. Uncontrolled blood glucose levels can be life-threatening and lead to more complicated conditions.
Remember…….Prevention is Key. You can do your part by staying active and eating healthy. |
