Hepatitis C is an inflammation of the liver that is caused by a specific virus. Hepatitis C is usually spread though contact with blood and is most commonly transmitted through shared use of needles but was also transmitted through blood transfusions prior to 1992. Those infected with the virus will often remain symptom-free for years and be unaware that they have Hepatitis C.

There is currently no cure or vaccine for Hepatitis C. Treatment of the condition is centered on living a healthy lifestyle and avoiding medications or other substances, such as alcohol, that may further irritate the liver. If the disease progresses, your physician may prescribe an injection regimen to prevent further liver damage. Your physician will monitor your viral load (the amount of virus) and how well you responded to treatment to gauge your long-term treatment plan. |
